A conspiracy theory needs a concept of a deep, dark conspiracy that has effectively (!) hidden the real truth behind a conventional belief. So what could make something the greatest conspiracy theory of all time? … So, I’d suggest Jesus’s Resurrection isn’t it, since while this issue is momentous, there is nothing hidden about the question behind it. You either believe or you don’t, and if there was some conspiracy at the beginning it wasn’t very effective since it didn’t really leave much “proof”. I’d put Esau’s birthright as (successful) trickery, but the result didn’t stay hidden long, and while it led to the conflict between the brothers, they actually patched up when Esau forgave Jacob, so there wasn’t much impact (though others today try to make more of an issue of it). God forgave this trickery and accepted Jacob. Virgins for terrorists has some potential, as there is evidence that this is true hogwash yet it has achieved broad credit, and is impacting the present.
