What is the Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP)?
The GTP is an employment-based route into teaching. It allows graduate trainees to be employed as unqualified teachers at a school while working towards the Standards that all trainees have to meet in order to gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). All applications for the GTP must be made to an accredited Initial Teacher Training provider (such as The Alban Federation). All GTP trainees are assessed against the Professional Standards for Teachers (Qualified Teacher Status) set out by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA). To achieve this, trainees are observed on an ongoing basis by their mentors, the Federation co-ordinator and an external assessor. Trainees also have to compile a detailed portfolio to reflect their competence against the Standards and their year’s work in school. More general information about the GTP route into teaching can be found on the Training and Development Agency for Schools’ website at www.tda.gov.uk.
