What is the Government of Pakistan doing?
The government has led the response to the disaster with the deployment of rescue and relief operations. The National Disaster Management Authority says that it has provided almost 100,000 tents and many other items. The government is also taking responsibility for the coordination of camps, for search and rescue, and for evacuating people to safe areas. The government has also committed dozens of helicopters to the relief effort. While the government has been doing its best to respond to the disaster, disaster management authorities at all levels – district, provincial and national – are overstretched, and additional support from the international community is urgently required so that authorities can competently manage the response.
