What is the “governing” standard when it comes to the design, construction and installation of the actual moving gate used in an automated system?

While UL325 contains many references to the gate itself in terms of safety, the actual governing standard is the ASTM F2200. ASTM F2200 “establishes the performance-based and prescriptive-based methods of evaluating various classes of automated gate constructions that are used for vehicular traffic. The gate types addressed in this specification include horizontal slide gates, horizontal swing gates, vertical lift gates, vertical pivot gates, and overhead pivot gates.” Like UL325, this standard also addresses the gate construction requirements based on the usage classifications and, in fact, adopts the UL325 Classes for this purpose. A complete copy of the four page standard document is available from ASTM International – click here to go to their web site and download the document (ASTM charges a fee for this).
