What is the Global Rescue Station?
As part of the joint campaign to save the Styx ancient trees, Greenpeace and The Wilderness Society have constructed a unique, high-tech Global Rescue Station in the form of a ‘tree sit’ at the top of one of the Styx forest’s tallest trees. At a height of 65 metres it is the tallest tree sit in the world. The ‘tree sit’ will be undertaken by a team of up to eight peaceful activists who will occupy the Global Rescue Station, to protect these magnificent trees. Activists from Australia, Japan, Canada and Germany are taking part. The station will be used to communicate regular updates, images and messages from the activists to the world via satellite and a laptop computer. Visitors and media are invited to go up into the station. The launch of the Global Rescue Station was timed to coincide with the Scientific and Technical meeting of the Convention on Biological Diversity in Montreal Canada (10th-14th of November).
