What is the Global Polio Eradication Initiative?
The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) strengthens the Expanded Programme on Immunization by supporting national efforts to eradicate a key vaccine-preventable childhood disease, poliomyelitis. The Initiative aims to stop polio transmission by the close of 2005 and certify the world polio-free by 2008. Spearheaded by the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, Rotary International, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and national governments, the GPEI is the largest public health initiative in history. The Initiative’s partners collaborate with private foundations, development banks, donor governments, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and corporate partners to ensure all children are immunized until the disease is eradicated. Since 1988, roughly two billion children worldwide have been immunized, in large part due to the unprecedented cooperation of more than 200 countries and 20 million volunteers and backed by an international investment of $3 billio
