What is the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria?
The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, an independent organization, was created to increase resources to fight three of the world’s most devastating diseases and to direct those resources to areas of greatest need. The Global Fund — which is a partnership between governments, civil society, the private sector and affected communities — was created in 2001 at the urging of U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan. Governments, foundations, corporations not-for-profit organizations, and individuals have pledged about $6 billion to the Global Fund, payable through 2008.
