What is the gestation period of a guppy from when you buy her and when she gives birth?
Gestation averages about four weeks. It varies, depending on water temperature (it goes faster in warmer water). However, since female guppies are usually pregnant when you buy them, it’s hard to know how far along your guppy is in the process, unless you know the last time she gave birth. Female guppies can store sperm packets in their bodies for at least six months. That means a guppy, once impregnated, can have several subsequent broods of fry without any additional insemination. Many people, when the only guppy in the tank gives birth, assume that it must be an immaculate conception, or that the catfish in the tank is the father, but neither is the case.
