What is the geography of Fort Wayne, Indiana?
Modern Fort Wayne provides the big city feel, although size and upkeep are lacking in comparison to larger cities. Steps are under way to bring back the downtown area. Just last month (November) the city announced a new baseball stadium that will be built for their minor league team. The stadium will also include a shopping mall, restaurants, and condominiums. Fort Wayne has always been an important transportation hub, even though it is served by only one interstate highway. Even though Fort Wayne is roughly midway between the largest cities of four states- Indianapolis, Chicago, Detroit, and Columbus, there is a direct freeway connection (I-69) to only one of those four cities (Indianapolis). The city straddles a single interstate highway, Interstate 69, which serves as the western portion of a beltway (I-469 serves as the eastern portion), and is served by Norfolk Southern and CSX rail transportrail lines as well as Fort Wayne International Airport and Smith Field regional airport.
