What is the geography of Fairfield, Maine?
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 141.5 km sq (54.6 square miles). 139.3 km sq (53.8 mi sq) of it is land and 2.2 km sq (0.9 mi sq) of it (1.56%) is water. The town has three post offices due to the fact that there are three different unincorporated townships within the municipal jurisdiction of the Town of Fairfield. They are Fairfield Center (no post office), Shawmut (post office location), and Hinckley (post office location). The CDP or urban area of the actual Town of Fairfield also has a post office. The town was formerly known as Kendall’s Mill. For a time period of approximately 75 years the urban area of the Town of Fairfield was under a Village Corporation type of government.
