According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 59.4 km sq (22.9 square miles), all land (the town has no significant ponds, but the Hoosic River does run through it). Adams includes the summit of Mount Greylock, at 3,491 feet the highest point in Massachusetts, a waypoint on the Appalachian Trail, and inspiration to Herman Melville, among other 19th Century writers.
