What is the genetic cause of Downs syndrome?

0

The genetic cause is a mutation in the chromosomes that causes a trisomy(3 chromosomes) at the 21st pair. During meiosis the sex cells are supposed to split in a way that the chromosome number is reduced by half. However in Downs the chromosomes become “sticky” and the pair of chromosome doesn’t separate. Therefore when that egg or sperm unites then that chromosome has 3 instead of two. It is thought that maternal age plays a part in Downs however I had my Downs child when I was 30.
