What is the General Product Safety Directive (2001/95/EC)?
This contains traceability requirements for products (including food). This directive imposes new obligations on food producers and distributors to ensure that food products can be traced back to their point of production. Came into effect 15 January 2004 New obligations on food producers and distributors Traceability back to point of production for food products Obligation to recall unsafe products Notification to competent authorities of unsafe products Competent authority power to order and organise recalls Under the General Food Law Regulation traceability is only required from the EU border, so that only the food business which directly supplies an importer based in the EU would need to be identified by law. A number of Codex Committees and Task Forces are considering the appropriate application and requirement for traceability at an international level.
