What is the GD ROM drive and how does it compare to a standard CD ROM drive?
The GD ROM is a special proprietary CD ROM drive that was developed by Yamaha for exclusive use in the Dreamcast console. This GD ROM can hold 1 Gigabyte of data (compared to the 640 MB size of standard CD ROMs) and is a 12 speed unit. The entire 26 MB of RAM inside the Dreamcast can be loaded full of data within 15 seconds by the GD ROM drive, meaning that load times for Dreamcast software will be kept to an absolute minimum.
