What is the Gadsden “Don’t Tread on Me” Flag?
The flag is yellow with a coiled rattlesnake emblazoned with the slogan “Don’t Tread on Me.” This flag is sometimes adopted by Tea Party members to honor the American Revolution. It was named for Col. Christopher Gadsden who was a South Carolina delegate to the Continental Congress. The homeowner has flown the flag from his house for most of 2010. According to Yahoo News Arizona only allows citizens to fly “the Stars and Stripes, the state flag, flags representing Indian nations as well as the official flags of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard.” The man, Andy McDonel says that his flag is legal to fly in Arizona because it’s a flag from the Revolution, and that his HOA is wrong. The ACLU is actually defending him as well because they believe the HOA is restricting McDonel’s freedom of speech. He even has a blog chronicling his battle to fly his flag at his own home.
