What is the future of space exploration?
If the focus remains on exploration then it is indeed limited. A better concept is permanent presence. Deployment of an autonomous sensor web in deep space will allow us to monitor every corner of our solar system and provide early warning of potential threats and timely observation of unusual phenomenon. Continual monitoring of the nearest 1,000 stars will provide early warning of Near-Galactic activity. A permanent science station on the Moon will pave the way for colonization of the Moon and Mars. Our Solar System is rich in virgin resources that do not need to be lifted into orbit from the Earth. Access to these resources will enable off-world industry and drive a new revolution of robotics technology. Historical precedent shows dramatic economical benefits of colonization. Participation in space missions improves the technology and reduces costs. Necessity really is the mother of invention. While the budget of NASA is not trivial, it is certainly not wasteful.
