He specializes in modern British history and his published work focuses on the histories of love, sexuality and intimacy in twentieth-century Britain. His major publications include Modern Love: An Intimate History of Men and Women in Twentieth-Century Britain (London, 2003, Newark, DL, 2006) and the edited volume, The Permissive Society and its Enemies: Sixties British Culture (London, 2007).
