What is the fundamental difference between being Catholic and being a rank-and-file Christian?
Answer Hi Damon! THEE fundamental difference between Catholic Christians and non-Catholic Christians is that of authority. Catholics believe authority lies in the Church leadership, holy Spirit guided men who have the God-given authority to definitively and without error tell the rest of us what is and is not true. We believe the bible is authoritative, but that our authority must be a God-lead, audible voice with the authority to clear up mistakes, answer questions, and guide in a visible, audible manner. This authority lies with the pope and, when teaching in union with the pope, his bishops. Non-Catholic Christians believe authority lies in the bible alone. Rather than God guiding certain individuals to a correct understanding of the bible who then teach the rest of us, they believe that each, individual believer can correctly understand the bible, without error, by asking the holy Spirit for a correct interpretation. Hope that helps!
