What is the function of the spinal nerves?
The nerves in the spinal cord control many of the functions of the body. The central nervous system runs through the spine. These nerves control the organs and movements of the body.IdentificationThe spinal cord is a part of the central nervous system or CNS. The spinal cord begins just below the brain stem and ends in the lumbar area. It contains 31 pairs of spinal nerves.Cervical and Thoracic SpineThe upper portion of your spine (the neck area), called the cervical spine, contains eight pairs of spinal nerves. These nerves supply the eyes, auditory nerves, ear, face, upper neck and head. The mid-cervical spine controls the tonsils, teeth, thyroid, outer ear, vocal cords, mouth, shoulders and neck. The thoracic spine (mid-back area) contains 12 pairs of spinal nerves and controls many of the internal organs such as the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, stomach, kidneys, spleen, small intestines and adrenal glands. These nerves also control the arms, heart, hands and esophagus.Lumbar Spine
