What Is The Function Of The Periosteum?
Periosteum is basically a membrane which lines the outer surface of all the bones, except the joints of long bones. This membrane consists of irregular dense connective tissues. It is divided into outer fibrous layer and inner cambium layer. It also has nociceptors nerve endings, which makes it sensitive to manipulate. It also provides nourishment in the form of blood supply. It is attached to the bone by strong collagenous fibers. The main function of Periosteum is that it acts an an attachment for the muscles and the tendons. It is also responsible for increasing the width of the long bone and the overall size of all the bone. It also helps in the healing process when there is a bone fracture.
