What is the function of the loop of henle and the collecting duct in osmoregulation?
The Kidneys regulate the body’s WATER CONTENT ( OSMOREGULATION) Mammals excrete urea in solution, so water is lost too. The kidneys regulate the levels of water in the body. 1) If the body is dehydrated (eg if the body has lost a lot of water by swaeting), then more water is reabsorbed by osmosis from the tubles of the nephron, so less water is lost in the urine. 2) If the body has a high water content (eg from drinking a lot), then less water is reabsorbed from the tubules, so more water is lost in the urine. This regulation takes place in the middle and last parts of the nephron – the LOOP OF HENLE, the distal convulated tubule and the collecting duct. The volume of water reabsorbed is controlled by hormones.
