What is the function of the B+ High/Low Voltage Switch?
The main purpose of the B+ voltage switch is to allow the amplifier to operate in a half power mode. The low B+ mode allows for a “tweed” or “brown” tone and provides a natural overdriven tone at approximately half the wattage. Some companies utilize a Pentode/Triode switch to lower the wattage, which is inexpensive techinque. However, this method is often considered detrimental to tone. Operating a Pentode in a pseudo Triode mode, changes the output impedance of the power tubes. Therefore the relationship between the power tubes and speaker(s) has been affected. This mode also produces less harmonics and the tone can be darker. The B+ voltage switch determines the DC operating voltages the tubes are running at. High B+ Voltage is the normal position and the amplifier will be operating in the high power mode. We have selected the Low B+ Voltage so the amplifier will be at operating at approximately half power. Therefore, our 50 watt amplifier in the Low B+ Voltage mode will be operatin
