What Is the Function of Chlorophyll?
“Hi I’m Brian with Ericksontutoring.blogspot.com. Today we are going to discuss the function of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is essentially the green pigment inside the leaves of plants that captures sunlight. Chlorophyll is made up of two Greek words. The first one is khloros which means pale green. The second one is phyllon which means a leaf so chlorophyll means pale green leaf and that helps you remember that it is the pigment that gives leaves their green color. The function in particular chlorophyll captures sunlight so sunlight comes in and that sunlight takes your electrons which are represented by partial arrows and it excites one of them up to a new high energy states. This is extremely unstable and this electron essentially gets passed down a chain from one chlorophyll to another until eventually it reaches something called a reaction center, photosystem one or photosystem two which is where photosynthesis occurs.
