During the December 1994 Summit of the Americas in Miami, 34 democratically elected Heads of State of the Western Hemisphere set a goal to create a Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) by 2005. The FTAA will eliminate trade and investment barriers on virtually all goods and services traded by member countries, by reducing prices for consumers and creating new markets for products throughout the hemisphere. This integration effort would create the largest free trade area in the world, stretching from Tierra del Fuego, Argentina to Alaska, U.S.A., with more than 800 million consumers. The mission of the FTAA is to preserve and strengthen the democratic institutions of the Western Hemisphere and to promote economic prosperity and well being through economic integration and free trade.
