What is the formulation of Lithium and other Greases?
I’m not a grease expert, as my experience lies more within the range of chemistry, but I think I can give a good idea. If you really want to know the *specific* ingredients, maybe check the MSDS of the grease products you have in question. However, I do know that often the active ingredient in greases is actually soap, believe it or not. Not quite like the soap we use, but the same class of chemicals. AFAIK they’re usually made from soaps made between metal hydroxides and saturated long chain acids. For example, with stearic acid, you typically see things like lithium stearate, aluminum stearate, magnesium stearate and zinc stearate. These compounds are by themselves waxy hard solids, so they need to be dissolved in something (some kind of long chain oil would be my guess) to make a gooey paste or a thick liquid, depending how it’s diluted. Napalm is actually made this way, and could be considered a kind of grease. Reacting aluminum hydroxide with vegetable stearic acid in a beaker and
