The formula of magnesium nitrate is Mg(NO3)2. It is a hygroscopic salt which quickly forms hexahydrate when exposed to moisture. In hydrated form its formula is Mg(NO3)2·6H2O. The formula of magnesium nitrate, Mg(NO3)2 is because of the fact that symbol of magnesium is Mg, nitrate is NO3. The valency of magnesium is +2 while that of nitrate is -1, therefore, valency of nitrate comes under Mg and that of Mg comes under nitrate and the formula becomes Mg(NO3)2.
