What is the “Food vs Fuel” debate all about?
A. There are those protecting their own interests by spreading the food vs fuel debate. In the case of soy biodiesel this is simply unfounded. Soybeans in this country have been traditionally grown for animal feed. Because animals cannot digest the high fat content in the bean seed the oil has to be extracted. Until recently this extracted oil was of very little value. Using the soy oil in fuel only adds value to a crop that continues to be fed to animals as it has always been. Prairie Pride will be producing more than 467,000 tons of soybean meal and 36,000 tons of pelletized soy hulls anually. By doing so we will be capable of producing 30 million gallons of biodiesel each year.
