What is the first step in getting a passport?

You can go to www.travel.state.gov where you can fill out and print the passport application. You will need two current passport photos (Walgreens, Rite Aid, and Costco are all places you can get the photos taken for about $7-10 dollars) and a certified copy of your birth certificate. Once you have your completed application, photos, and birth certificate you can go to your local post office or county building (you can find these locations on the above website) to submit your passport, photos and birth certificate and pay $60 for the passport and $37 for the processing fee. In about 3-6 weeks you’ll be mailed your passport and birth certificate.
