WHAT IS THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF PRISONS?
Congress established the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) as a component of the Department of Justice in 1930. Its mission is to protect society by confining offenders in the controlled environments of prison and community-based facilities that are safe, humane, and appropriately secure, while providing work and other self-improvement opportunities to assist offenders in becoming law-abiding citizens. The BOP is organized nationally into six regions, (South Central, Southeast, North Central, Northeast, Western, and Mid-Atlantic), and has its headquarters (Central Office) in Washington, D.C. The regional offices currently support over 100 institutions nationwide. WHAT TYPE OF STUDENT EMPLOYMENT IS AVAILABLE TO ME WITH THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF PRISONS? We offer two types of student employment, the Student Temporary Employment Program and the Student Career Experience Program.
