What is the fascination with true crime books?

Its like the car crash syndrome…people are fixated, fascinated on bad things/bad happenings – but just like a bystander at an accident, would rather have a stickybeak from a safe distance than be up to their elbows in it! I think true crime has that same effect…it allows you to literally “enter” the world of these criminals, the pursuing police, their deeds, etc…but from the safety and comfort of your own world – kind of like exploring the taboo… Humans have a natural, inbuilt fascination with the morbid – just look at the news and how much attention a bad event gets! True crime is just one such manifestation of this…and why we do, I’m not sure…but everyone does!
