What is the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA)?
When you enter college, your records fall under the provisions of the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (aka FERPA or the Buckley Amendment). This law protects the privacy of your student record. We may not discuss your records with anyone else without your consent. Should you wish to grant consent to a third party (parents), you may submit a Student Consent for Release of Information to Third Parties which can be found here: http://colonialcentral.gwu.edu/forms/. Please submit this form to the Office of the Registrar @ Colonial Central. If you do not file this form with the Registrar’s Office, we are prevented by federal law to release any information to a third party without your consent. Please carefully consider the ramifications of both limiting and granting access to your student records. All questions regarding FERPA should be directed to the Office of the Registrar.
