What is the expected life span of the lower control lines (cat’s eye, etc.)?
As with other types of line sets, the lower control lines can often last as long as the rest of the line set. This part of the line set is sized to take the increased wear inherent in the brake system. Lower control lines are subject to premature wear, however, due to damage from Velcro, guide rings with rough or sharp edges, or from grommets that have rough or sharp edges. Therefore, as a high wear area, lower control lines should be inspected regularly for signs of wear or damage. How can you tell when it is time to reline your HMA line set? Regular inspections should indicate the degree of wear along with any signs of unusual damage. An excessively dirty and shiny appearance or tufts of fiber are indications of wear. With HMA line sets, the time to reline will usually be a wear or damage factor, rather than an issue of trim or performance. This is a judgment call that must be made through your own experienced judgment and/or with the assistance of a knowledgeable rigger. See picture
