What is the Expanded Renewable Energy Target (ERET)?
ERET is an expansion of the Mandatory Renewable Energy Target Scheme (MRET) which was established in 2001. In August 2009, the Federal Government revised the existing MRET Scheme and created the Expanded Renewable Energy Target (ERET). ERET requires a significant increase in electricity to be generated from renewable sources from the original MRET Scheme. It requires approximately 20% of electricity to be generated from renewable sources by 2020. This means that annual renewable energy targets will significantly increase year on year to reach 45,850 GWh in 2020. The ERET continues to have a 45,000 GWh target through to 2030.
