What is the euro?
The euro is the sole European currencywhich came into existence on 1 January 1999. Beginning on January 2002euro-denominated coins and bank-notes will begin to circulate. From 1 March 2002 the previously used national currencies will no longer be legal tender. The euro is the result of the Maastricht Treaty (7 February 1992) which created the European Union out of the EEC.
