What is the equilibrium constant for the dynamic equilibrium between iodine in aqueous potassium iodide solution and hexane?
Ulex writes: Ive done a literature search on this one but have been unable to discover an answer. There seem to be quite a few qualitative observations on the system and some attempt at analysis of the reactions involved but no measurements of equilibrium constant. I suspect this may be because iodine reacts slowly with hexane even at room temperature, and as the analysis takes a while to perform (assuming it to be done by titration with sodium thiosulphate solution), the results may be rather imprecise and difficult to replicate. There is, however, a report of a result where tetrachloromethane has been used instead of hexane.
