What is the Entry Level Writing Requirement (ELWR) and how can I meet it?

Students enrolling in the University of California are required to demonstrate their ability to write effective essays by satisfying the Entry Level Writing Requirement. The requirement can be satisfied before enrollment by one of the following: • Passing the Analytical Writing Placement Examination • Scoring 680 or higher on the SAT Reasoning Test (Writing section) • Scoring 3 or higher on the Advanced Placement (AP) Exam in English • Scoring a 5 or higher on the International Baccalaureate (IB) Higher Level English A exam or a 6 or higher on the IB Standard Level English A exam. • Scoring a 30 on the ACT combined English/Writing test. • Passing a UC transferrable course in English composition with a grade of C or better prior to first quarter enrollment at UCSD. Out-of-state students, may take the Analytical Writing exam before the beginning of the quarter. Test dates are available at the Basic Writing Program Website.
