What is the English Resistance in 1066?
The English Resistance lasted from about 1066 to about 1071. It was a reaction against the Norman invasion of England in 1066 and their subsequent ransacking of England. According to legend, one of the main leaders of it was “Hereward the Wake” who was based in Ely, and roamed the Fens, around North Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire killing Norman soldiers and stirring up opposition to William the Conqueror whose rule was becoming increasingly unpopular. The resistance was widespread but largely unco-ordinated and although there was some assistance from the Danes and the Celtic nations its success was limited. Two northern earls Edwin and Morcar organized resistance against William. In 1068 they raised a revolt in Mercia, but agreed to “peace terms” when William advanced against with a large army.
