What is the enforcement process on illegal basement suites and boarding houses?
As a growing region, the Municipality of Wood Buffalo is always attempting to monitor development and ensure that work complies with our regulations. However, each year many people undertake development without proper permits. The Municipality deals with many complaints each year, but typically only investigates those unlawful suites where complaints arise. However, as we increase staff, more random inspections of properties will be occurring. When the Municipality receives a complaint about an unlawful basement suite or boarding house, we investigate that complaint as quickly as possible. Given the complexity of the enforcement process, we have completed a chart, which can be found at the bottom of this page. It follows the process from the time a complaint is received to the various outcomes that can occur.
