What is the Emergency Hardship Loan and Who Can Apply?
The University has discretion to offer short-term loans to eligible students who have not received their loan instalment and the delay is through no fault of their own. The Emergency Hardship Loan (EHL) is aimed primarily at students who have been offered a place through clearing and have therefore applied late for their statutory funding. Continuing year students are generally not expected to apply to for an EHL. If you are eligible for a student loan, you have enrolled and the first instalment of your student maintenance loan is delayed and you cannot obtain assistance from your bank, family or other sources and have no financial means with which to support yourself in the meantime, then you may be eligible to apply for an EHL of £200 from the University. The loan is intended to cover basic essential costs such as food and travel; it will not cover all of your essential costs. It is paid for an initial four-week period (i.e. £50 per week).
