The arc is a means of transforming electrical energy into heat. The arc is an electrical discharge sustained through a gap in the electric circuit. The resistance offered by the air or gas in this gap to the passage of current creates high temperature which is concentrated at and between the terminals between which the gap is made, namely the work and the electrode tip.
