How easy it is depends on how addicted you are. If you are unlucky, you will be genetically predisposed to being especially addicted to tobacco. How common those genes are, I am not sure anybody knows yet. But that is partly why biological children of smokers so often smoke themselves (even when they are adopted by non-smoking families.) If you are truly addicted, it will be harder to quit than heroin is for a junkie. No kidding. But some ways work more often than others. Going cold turkey works less than 10% of the time. If you add either nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) such as the patch, or coaching by a support line or support group, it goes up to above 50%. The two together probably work even better. So if a quitline is available to you, I would definitely do that. It is free, and it really helps. They don’t lecture you, they support you. You can request the same person over and over, and you can even set up a schedule. You can do the same thing with some quit support websites (
