What is the Early Development Instrument (EDI) and what does it measure?
The Early Development Instrument (EDI) is a questionnaire designed to measure state of children development at kindergarten age. Designed by Drs. Dan Offord and Magdalena Janus of McMaster University, the EDI is a checklist that kindergarten teachers complete for each child in their class, after they have had several months of interaction with their students. The EDI comprises approximately 130 questions on the development of kindergarten-level children in five domains (or subscales), including: • physical health and well-being – this domain measures the degree to which groups of children are healthy, independent, ready each day, etc. • social competence – this domain measures whether children play, get along with others and share, are self-confident, etc. • emotional maturity – this domain measures whether children are able to concentrate, help others, be patient, not be aggressive or angry, etc. • language and cognitive development – this domain measures whether children are interest
