What is the “DSS” audio file format, and why would I use it?
“DSS” (Digital Speech Standard) sound files are every bit as high quality as “WAV” files, but 15 to 28 times smaller. “DSS” files also contain information such as time, date, and length of recording, along with the ID number of the person recording. A “DSS” 4-minute recording would be about 450K, while a WAV of that same size is over 5 megabytes. Its reduced size makes DSS particularly effective for e-mail or network transfer.
