What is the drinking water standard for chromium?
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standard for total chromium in drinking water is 100 parts per billion (ppb). Total chromium includes chromium-3 and chromium-6. Currently, individual drinking water standards do not exist for chromium-3 or chromium-6. The EPA standard for total chromium was established in 1991 based on the best available science to protect public health. In 2008, EPA began to review chromium-6 health effects and in September 2010, released a draft scientific assessment. When this report is finalized in 2011, EPA will review the conclusions and determine if a standard for chromium-6 is necessary for public health protection.
