What is the Dolan Geiman Art Machine?
The Dolan Geiman Art Machine was first unleashed aboard the Anita Dee II for Bridge Magazine’s Artboat 2003 (Chicago, IL). Built from an assortment of salvaged doors, mixed media works, silkscreen and acrylic paintings, found objects and re-envisioned fabric scraps, the Art Machine was built to create unique collage pieces in less than three minutes. In detail, the Art Machine is a portable, booth-like structure with a carnival-esque facade. The four sides of the machine are constructed from wooden doors with collaged found objects and handmade adornments. The canopy of the structure consists of a papier-mache rhinoceros head centerpiece, a wooden billboard sign, and a wire framed dome covered with fabric and cloth. The art machine became famous during its appearance at the Kentuck Festival when a small child was turned into a flying grasshopper after receiving his Art Machine gift.
