Good point from Eric,my father was given various jobs in the Army as many could not read and write (WW2).Education has improved, expected to-day. I think peoples expectations have changed overall.Bleriot had only just flown across the channel,so the only way to travel any significant distance was by train and ship. There was little technology,long-working hours around WW1,life was relatively simple.People would not have contemplated living together, marriage was the only way to be,but as many men could not afford to marry (particularly as the wife would be expected to be at home, looking after the family).Times have changed, often the partner now has to work to pay the mortgage.Interestingly,so many men were killed in WW 1,that after the war, there was only one man for every ten women ! There was a whole generation of women who were unmarried in the 1920’s/30’s.
