What is the different between casting and forging?
A casting is produced by allowing liquid metal to solidify in a mold (typically made from sand, ceramic or metal) to net or near net shape. The casting process can produce very complex geometry with isotropic (i.e. same in all directions) mechanical properties. A forging is produced by hammering or pressing heated metal into the desired shape, typically using tooling. The forging process creates directional grain flow that improves mechanical properties.
