AM stands for amplitude modulation, and FM stands for frequency modulation. As a wave, they are essentially the same, but they differ in the way that a radio recieves them. For an AM radio, the sound is played based on the amplitude of the wave, while with FM radios, the wave is read for slight changes in frequency. These changes are what create the sound that is played.
