What is the difference with young voters compared to other demographics?
They tend to look at the political system a bit more skeptically. In a way they are a bit more rational about what they chose to do. Older generations tend to vote because that’s what they always do, whereas young people are questioning whether voting is that useful, since neither (major) parties are that attractive. For that reason you see lower turnout rates in other countries, and here young people would be less likely to vote if it wasn’t compulsory, and many are missing from the electoral roll. How many would have got on the electoral roll a few weeks ago if the polls hadn’t closed so early, I’m not sure, but I wouldn’t imagine it would be 70 percent of the 1.4 million people aged 18 to 39 missing from the roll.
