What is the difference really between cell phone numbers and residential landline numbers?
The difference is how cell phone and landline information is classified. For years home telephone numbers have been considered public. (Remember, if you want your home telephone number unlisted, you have to pay your phone company extra!) Cell phones have always been considered more private than home telephones, especially considering that even when you receive a cell phone call you have to pay for it… whether or not you really want to talk to that person. So to avoid unwanted cell phone calls (think telemarketers!), cell phone numbers are typically harder to get. While at first glance a free reverse cell phone directory might seem like a convenience to everyone, in reality, a free cell phone directory would likely cause headaches for cell phone owners who would be annoyed with unsolicited calls. After all, when people receive a phone call on their cell phones, they have an expectation that it is important.
